2023 Podcast & Radio LUMI Schedule

Radio LUMI is an online radio station that provides exclusive content with live-from-location reporting, audio descriptions of festival programs, artist interviews, as well as other exciting content created for and by the blind/low vision and Disability communities. 

Starting June 7, tune in daily to hear Radio LUMI led by hosts Christine Malec, Ramya Amuthan, Theodore Walker Robinson along with audio describers, Rebecca Singh and JJ Hunt, and many special guests. Music and Artist Spotlight series are curated by producer Dev Ramsawakh.  

Leading up to the festival, Radio LUMI is releasing a new series of six podcasts starting Friday, May 19, to get listeners prepped for the full festival experience. Check back every Friday and Tuesday, or subscribe to the podcast on Spotify, for new content.

What is Audio Description?

Christine Malec

Christine Malec is an arts and culture consultant within the blind community, and co-host of the podcast Talk Description to Me.  She offers culture and music programs to blind adults through the CNIB Foundation and hosts a monthly segment on Accessible Media Incorporated, Kelly and Ramya, called Curious Minds.  She is a musician who can be heard singing her heart out regularly in the TTC Subway System.  She lives in Toronto, Canada.

JJ Hunt

JJ Hunt is an award-winning freelance writer, narrator, and editor of described material with over twenty years experience creating description-rich content for film, television, fine arts, live events, tours, podcasts, and interactive workshops. He has completed almost 2000 projects for a variety of clients including CBC Television, AMItv, The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Pan American Games, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Obama Presidential Center, the World Pride Parade, NASA, and the CNIB. His descriptions of the visual world can be heard in the innovative podcast Talk Description to Me.

Ramya Amuthan

Ramya Amuthan is the Cohost and Producer at Accessible Media Inc’s daily Entertainment and Lifestyle audio show, Kelly and Ramya.  Her work involves meeting fascinating people, hearing their stories, and facilitating conversations that bring out their voices and messages. Ramya is also the Co-creator of Adventures, a chapter of the Canadian Council of the Blind in Toronto, creating daring physical activity opportunities for blind and low vision individuals, encouraging participants to step out of their comfort zones. For Ramya, there’s always time for self-care and hobbies, including singing – for herself and sometimes others, movement – like dancing or downhill skiing, meditation, and the life-long journey of brushing up on her culinary skills.

Rebecca Singh

Rebecca Singh has been audio describing film, television, live performance, and visual art since 2011.  Her extensive experience includes producing, writing, and voicing descriptions on all genres of artwork shows and events from around the world including art films, large scale art installations, dance, and opera. Rebecca works with members of the Blind and partially sighted community on every project.  Rebecca leans on experiences from her collaborative multidisciplinary art practice to navigate production needs and timelines. Also a performer for screen and stage, she has created and performed theatre spanning from solo pieces to large spoken choruses. She recently performed at the Women at Play(s) 5 Festival and voices audio descriptions for exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Rebecca is the founder and CEO of Superior Description Services and a contributor to the Routledge Handbook to Audio Description. Originally from Alberta, she called Montreal home for over a decade and now is based out of Toronto.

Theodore Walker Robinson

Theodore Walker Robinson (they/them) is a Black, low-vision, hard-of-hearing, nonbinary broadcaster, scholar, fashion designer, and multi-disciplinary artist. Theodore was born to parents of Maroon Jamaican and Afro-Chinese Trinidadian descent who settled in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the early 1970s. Theodore is a creative consultant based in Toronto and Executive Director of Lakeshore Arts in South Etobicoke.

Dev Ramsawakh (Producer)

Dev Ramsawakh is a disabled, non-binary and diasporic Indo-Caribbean award-winning multidisciplinary storyteller, producer and educator whose practice has been supported by the Ontario Arts Council, SKETCH Toronto, Tangled Art + Disability and Luminato Festival Toronto. Their work has been published on platforms like Toronto Star, Chatelaine, CBC, Xtra and Autostraddle. You can find Dev on Twitter and TikTok @merkyywaters and on Instagram @merkyy_waters or on their website IndivisibleWriting.com.

Cathy Gordon (Producer)

Cathy is an artist, curator, and producer, currently working fulltime at Luminato. As the former Managing Director of The Theatre Centre, they had a key role in establishing the groundwork for the company’s current performance facility. While there, they conceived and produced the sprawling community-building art-party, Block In One Spot that brought together artists and neighbourhood personalities. They subsequently curated and/or produced the Live Art series and/or Off-Site series at SummerWorks while also volunteering as co-Artistic Director of hub14 art and performance works. Artistically, their work vibrates between theatre, live art, and performance art. They have workshopped and presented solo and collective performances across Canada, UK, Europe, and NYC.
