Luminato Live at Yonge-Dundas Square!
Long days. Warm nights. It’s summer in Toronto and Luminato is back.
Luminato 2022 opens with a FREE LIVE in-person takeover in the heart of the city, filling Yonge-Dundas Square with concerts, onstage talks, delightful activities, and an Eco-Fair stacked with sustainable inspiration and ideas.
Explore art and climate activism through the perspective of artists and makers with music and talks, including a rare public opportunity for Dr. Pam Palmater, Dr. David Suzuki and Edward Burtynsky to share the stage in
conversation.
Enjoy main stage concerts at 7pm with iskwē on Thursday June 9th. On Friday June 10th at 7pm, the Molinari Quartet take the stage, followed by Queer Songbook Youth Orchestra featuring Beverly Glenn-Copeland and special guests at 8pm. Scroll down to see full programming details and daily schedule.

Don’t miss the world premiere of Edward Burtynsky’s In the Wake of Progress at 8pm on Saturday and Sunday, free for all. Burtynsky’s breathtaking exploration of humanity’s impact on the earth fills the screens surrounding Yonge-Dundas Square until 11pm each night, immersing audiences in a 30-minute visual journey accompanied by Phil Strong’s epic original score.

iskwē: acākōsik

Originally commissioned for Stanford Live, iskwē brings her multi-disciplined, performance art piece acākosīk back to the stage. Reimagined for Luminato, acākosīk will take you on an emotional journey that centres on internal transformation, the resilience and survival of Indigenous people and the healing power of catharsis.

Before I die…
Join this global participatory art project and share your dreams with the world on a beautiful mural. First created by artist Candy Chang in New Orleans, and since recreated in 78 countries and 35 languages, leave your mark on the world at CF Toronto Eaton Centre. Located on Level 2, north end of the shopping centre.

MOLINARI QUARTET

Making their debut Join the internationally acclaimed Molinari Quartet, whose massive shows The Children’s Crusade (2009) and Apocalypsis (2015) were major projects for Luminato, in celebrating the work of the late great R Murray Schafer (1933-2021).

Queer Songbook Youth Orchestra featuring Beverly Glenn-Copeland

Making their debut Performance on the Luminato stage, the Queer Songbook Youth Orchestra will be appearing with the QSO in support of Beverly Glenn-Copeland and his deep catalogue of transcendent songs, an evening of intergenerational exchange centered around honouring each other and reclaiming the earth.

Eco-Fair
Bringing together local makers, artisans, and climate-conscious entrepreneurs. Grab a snack in a cute reusable jar from Unboxed, and fill your own mug with coffee from Coffee and Clothing. Collaborate with artist Melanie Billark on a live art installation made of reused materials, to a soundtrack of smart talks with inspiring people, and an eclectic array of live music.
Vendors include allBambu, A Different Booklist, Coffee and Clothing, Roots + Raven, Unboxed Market, Upmade, and ANDPVA Art Market.

Migration Celebration
Flock to Yonge-Dundas Square for Migration Celebration, a stilt-walking, puppet-waving, bird-themed spectacle celebrating Toronto’s position along the migration path of our feathered friends, while honouring the many migrants, refugees, and newcomers who now call Toronto home. Featuring performers from Shadowland Theatre and the communities of North Etobicoke and Flemingdon Park. Part of Illuminating Ideas.

Looking back on the environmental movement in the 30 years (nearly to the day) since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, join Dr. Pamela Palmater, Mi’kmaq lawyer, professor, and activist, Dr. David Suzuki, and Edward Burtynsky in conversation about how the environmental movement has changed, celebrating the victories of the last thirty years, and examining the failures. Following a discussion, the panellists will be joined by youth activist-artists from Lakeshore Arts’ Youth Climate Collective, to answer the question “What do we do now?” Part of Illuminating Ideas.

Bringing the thrill of New Orleans street brass to Yonge-Dundas Square. These horns and drums will ring out through the square and get you movin’, groovin’, and shakin’ to the beat.

Catchfiyah
Electronic duo Catchfiyah welcomes Turkish clarinetist Selcluk Suna and Peruvian percussionist Matias Recharte for this special Luminato show. Pairing world beats with disco and EDM, Catchfiyah weaves social commentary through creative storytelling and the hypnotic rhythms of Jamaican-Canadian Lauren Barnett and Greek-Canadian Demetrios Petsalakis.

Ancestral musical styles + urban cultural expression = New Tradition Music. Join Beny Esguerra and his crew of 8 musicians and 6 dancers in an explosive interactive performance that explores concepts of tradition and modernity through spoken word, music, song, dance and design.

COVID SAFETY
With the health and safety of our audiences, artists, staff, and volunteers as our top priority, Luminato will continue to require proof of vaccination for all indoor performances in 2022.
While the government of Ontario has lifted the mandatory check for vaccine passports as of March 1, we are choosing to keep our policy in place. We thank you for your patience and understanding as government policies are continually changing.
Face masks are required for all indoor performances. Face masks are strongly encouraged for all outdoor performances.
Luminato’s Vaccine Policy
Audiences will be required to show proof of full vaccination and photo ID for all indoor performances. Proof of vaccination must include the attendee’s name, date of vaccination and product name (brand of vaccine). The receipt can be in paper or in an electronic format (shown on the patron’s phone).
Remember, you are considered ‘fully vaccinated’ only 14 days after your second dose.
Proof of ID must include the patron’s name and date of birth.
For outdoor performances and events, proof of vaccination is not required.
