Programmed in partnership with Hot Docs Cinema, feature length documentary We Are From There speaks to the feeling of longing and remembrance that is present in our festival programming. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Leen Al Zaibek and Ahmed Moneka responding to the film, moderated by Justine Abigail Yu.
We Are From There by Wissam Tanios (82 minutes, Arabic with English subtitles)
Two Syrian brothers in their mid 20s take a leap of faith and decide to start their lives from scratch in new cities. They leave everything behind except their passion for life, determination, sense of humor and hope for a better future. Their closest cousin, Wissam, decides to film their odysseys for over five years, questioning the true meaning of home, bringing back some childhood memories, while exploring the human ability to cope with change as radical as it may be.

Alex, a six-year-old boy from Quebec, is oblivious to the thousands of refugees entering Canada illegally to avoid deportation. Yet when his father takes him along to a vigilante patrol in the woods to hunt out trespassing migrants, something inside him tells him to rebel.

A collaboration with over 30 musicians, including Béla Fleck, Robi Botos, Ifrah Mansour, Demetrios Petsalakis, Imad Al Taha, Amir Amiri, Duke Redbird, Twin Flames and others in a wide-ranging treatise on displaced peoples.
