What is Canada? is the second episode of Golden Hour, as curated by Djennie Laguerre. This episode focuses on how folklore and mythology shapes a culture’s moral codes. What are the stories we tell ourselves? How does that work with understanding who we are as Canadians?
What is Canada? features the work of 3 powerful storytellers: Djennie Laguerre, Courage Bacchus and Diana Tso performing across different languages.
Canada as a place is made up of its stories. Canada is made up of our understanding of vast space, stretching from one ocean to the other with an ocean of wheat in the middle.
When I travel abroad, the complexity of being Canadian follows me. All at the same time, I am Canadian and an immigrant I am from Ontario and Francophone I am an artist and an educator. This is a place where I found my family of blood and spirit. It is a place of safety for me but it the same time is a place of oppression for others. There is no naivety there.
This is a truly beautiful land and I’m grateful to live here because of the openness the politeness that follows me when I travel abroad, but I have not been stripped of my Haitian identity. Canada allows me to live in between, and for me, there is richness in between.”
