Nicky Lawrence is a Toronto-based singer, songwriter, actor, playwright and producer. She has toured Canada as a back-up vocalist with Amanda Marshall, and has been a featured vocalist in several special performances including the Women’s Blues Review (Roy Thompson Hall), and the University of Toronto’s Black History Month programming (Hart House). Nicky’s acting career has included roles in TV (Schitt’s Creek, Anne with an E, and Workin’ Moms), and theatre (The Shaw Festival, Shrek the Musical, Seussical, and Hairspray). In 2017, Nicky was commissioned by Regina’s Globe Theatre to write and produce Key Change - a resounding artistic and commercial success. It was the precursor to her current multimedia theatre-concert project, Ugly Black Woman which elevates and amplifies the Black female voice through historical and modern-day stories of Black Canadian women told via music, storytelling, and interviews. The critically-acclaimed show was recently performed to a sold out audience at the Paradise Theatre in Toronto.
