In light of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and with the health and well-being of our artists, our staff and volunteers, and our audiences above everything else in our minds, it is with great sadness that we cancel Luminato Festival Toronto 2020. Given Luminato’s origins as an initiative to help rejuvenate Toronto after SARS, we are keenly aware of our responsibility to the City in this moment, and also later, when we return.

We have followed guidance from the City, Provincial and Federal governments very closely, and have been in contact with our colleagues in other cultural organizations, as well as with the artists and venue partners in our 2020 Festival. We have tried to make our best estimate of the practicality of going ahead with our 14th festival this June, but after all of that it is clear that Luminato 2020 is sadly not to be.

We had a thrilling program planned for this June, which we were just about to announce: works of theatre, dance, music, food, ideas, visual art, installations and more, created by extraordinary international, national and local artists, and built around three weekends of free, outdoor projects in different parts of Toronto. Those plans must now be put aside, given the urgency of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, and the virtual shut-down of our city, as our best precaution to stem the spread of the disease.

These are challenging times for us all.  Everyone at Luminato is determined to do whatever we can to help ensure that Toronto’s cultural community survives this critical period, and we will play our part to help rebuild all the things that will need rebuilding.

We will be in touch directly with Festival ticket-holders about their ticketing options. Please stay tuned for our plans online and in the public realm, when the conditions allow.

Wishing you safety and good health.
