Kid Koala's Nufonia Must Fall Live

A graphic novel animated in real time with a live soundtrack

June 7 – 9, 2014

In his third Luminato Festival appearance, Montreal-based scratch DJ and music producer Kid Koala follows last year's immersive, whimsical Space Cadet with another a magical, multi-disciplinary adaptation of one of his graphic novels, Nufonia Must Fall.

Fascinating ... an absolute treat

— The Toronto Film Scene
The story centres around a headphones-sporting robot on the verge of obsolescence and infatuated with a winsome office drone. Though the robot cannot sing, he valiantly tries to write love songs and serenade his beloved.

Directed by K.K. Barrett, recently Oscar-nominated for Her, this live adaptation unfolds via real-time filming of more than a dozen miniature stages and a cast of puppets. Observe the creation of scenes and simultaneously watch it on screen. Koala and the dynamic Afiara Quartet provide live scoring on piano, strings and turntables.
Co-commissioned by the Luminato Festival, Adelaide Festival, Banff Centre, Internationales Sommerfestival Hamburg, Santiago A Mil, Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival Groningen, and Roundhouse.
