If I Loved You

Gentlemen Prefer Broadway – An Evening of Love Duets

June 14 , 2014

World Premiere

Rufus Wainwright teams up with Grammy- and Tony-winning music director Stephen Oremus to redefine dozens of the most beloved gems in the Great American Songbook, all love songs from Broadway musicals.

Glitzy showbiz thrills of the highest order

In their original productions, these songs were performed as duets by a man and a woman, or by a man singing about a woman. Wainwright's recontextualizations, performed exclusively by men and to men, fortify the song's universality as expressions of love.

Many of these treasured numbers were crafted by some of the Broadway's most legendary gay men: Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Jerry Herman, Lorez Hart. Other songs, like Rodgers and Hammerstein's "We Kiss in a Shadow" from The King and I, have long beel claimed as anthems by the gay community. The groundbreaking evening will showcase Wainwright and an insternational spectrum of pop, rock, classical and musical theatre stars. Drawing on a century of stage hits and featuring a full Broadway orchestra, If I Loved You will also serve as a wonderful prelude as Toronto hosts the first WorldPride ever celebrated in North America.

“This has to rank among the highlights of the eighth edition of the festival ... If I Loved You reminds us how lucky Toronto is to have this festival.”

“It was one of those unique shows too good to pass up”

“[Rufus Wainwright] birthed what could possibly be a long-lasting gem”
