Norman

A tribute to Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren.

June 1 – 3, 2007

Enter the universe of Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren and explore unknown territories where ever-present emotions can arise even in the most abstract moments.

Experience the creativity and inventiveness of a man who never stopped trying to extend the limits of his art. Film and theatre have a lot in common; both try to show us our world in a new way, to touch us and fill us with wonder. McLaren, who dreamed of being a dancer, was a choreographer of images. His creative genius, power and humanism are celebrated as never before, as mixmedia masters Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon employ the wizardry of virtual projection, developed by 4D art, to carry the audience into McLaren’s world. Intertwining film, interviews, visual and sound landscapes and live movement, as interpreted by performer and choreographer Peter Trosztmer, this one man tour de force, concurrently presented in English and French, pays fittingly bold and imaginative homage to a creative legend.

Norman McLaren is a giant, not only in the history of the National Film Board of Canada, but also in the history of the art of animation. His films form a coherent and extraordinary body of work that reveals an astounding inventiveness, groundbreaking research and deep-rooted humanism. McLaren was a complex artist – a prolific creator whose works are suffused with brilliance. With his abstract works drawn or scatched directly on film, he was a master of cameraless animation and ranks among the great names in experimental cinema. Influenced as much by surrealism as by his pacifist conviction, and shaped equally by a passion for dance and music, his films can be appreciated on many levels. His art lives on as a beacon of creativity and modernity.
