Luminato x Launchpad

An artistic development program in partnership with Artscape Daniels Launchpad.

June 11 – 18, 2019

Luminato is excited to announce Luminato x Launchpad, an artistic development program in partnership with Artscape Daniels Launchpad featuring workshops and masterclasses, across a variety of disciplines, led by leading artists in this year’s festival. With sessions ranging from topics like how to integrate digital media into theatre creation, how to develop a creative project over several years and how to best use self-expression in artistic practice, these educational programs highlight the hard work and unique visions of some of our established local artists.

Tickets for each of the classes, talks and workshops can be purchased through Launchpad, with discounts available for existing Launchpad members. Those interested are encouraged to book early as capacity, especially for masterclasses, is limited.

The Full Light of Day: Digital Media as a Narrative Tool
Date: Tuesday June 11, 2019
Time: 3pm – 4:30pm
Prices: $35 - $60
Location: Artscape Daniels Launchpad

Electric Company Theatre’s new work, The Full Light of Day, is a film/theatre hybrid of epic proportions. The production blurs the boundaries of media and theatre, using live film, cameras, and image and video projections to create an integrated and visually-stunning experience. Questions of perception and truth are accentuated through this blending of live and cinematic content.

Award-winning director Kim Collier will guide participants through the art of digital media as a narrative tool. Artists are encouraged to bring questions that will inform their own practise.

Monday Nights and The Theatre Centre: Residency and Collaboration
Date: Wednesday June 12, 2019
Time: 3pm – 5pm
Prices: $35 - $60
Location: Artscape Daniels Launchpad

Based on the ongoing real-life pickup basketball games played for a decade, Monday Nights is an interactive basketball and theatre experience, where five men recreate their stories for the stage and explore how a simple game can help us understand ourselves and connect to our community.

In this engaging workshop, the artists behind Monday Nights and the Creative Producer of The Theatre Centre will discuss the development and creation process of this work as a jumping off point, and go deeper into what it means to constantly adapt, manoeuvre, and change tactics when building a new creative project over a long period of time.

The Drawing Room: Portraiture and Self-Expression
Date: Tuesday June 18, 2019
Time: 1pm – 4pm
Price:  $100 - $125
Location: Artscape Daniels Launchpad

In Luminato’s visual arts exhibition, The Drawing Room, five North American visual artists explore issues of representation and community through large-scale portraiture. One of the exceptional artists in the exhibition, activist and educator Syrus Marcus Ware, will lead a masterclass on large-scale portraiture and self-expression.

This masterclass is an opportunity for visual artists to step away from the outside world and come together as an artistic community where vulnerabilities are respected, explored, and protected on the creative page.  Art supplies will be provided, but participants are also encouraged to bring whatever resources they feel they need.
