ShoShona Kish, visionary and recipient of the 2018 Womex Professional Excellence Award, hosts BIZIINDAN! a concert of celebration, featuring voices from across Turtle Island singing their truths, and culminating in a newly-commissioned tribute performance to the ‘trailblazer of truth,’ Willie Dunn. BIZIINDAN! features the captivating vocals of Marie Gaudet, 2010 Juno Award-winning band Digging Roots, 2017 Polaris Music Prize-winner Lido Pimienta, award-winning legendary artist Pura Fe, and 2018’s Polaris Music Prize-winner Jeremy Dutcher.

Canada, you are in the midst of an Indigenous renaissance. Are you ready to hear the truths that need to be told? Are you ready to see the things that need to be seen?
(from Jeremy Dutcher’s Polaris Prize acceptance speech)

Willie Dunn, an award-winning Mi’kmaq and Scottish singer/songwriter, filmmaker and activist, was a pioneer of protest ballads and an advocate for Indigenous rights. BIZIINDAN! will include a screening of Dunn’s film The Ballad of Crowfoot (1968-NFB), Canada’s first music video: a powerful look at colonial betrayals told through a striking montage of archival images about the 19th-century Siksika Chief who negotiated Treaty 7. A highlight of the evening will be a newly commissioned arrangement of The Ballad of Crowfoot music and tribute performance featuring the evening's artists as well as other guest performers.

BIZIINDAN! celebrates the power of music, the reclamation of voice, and the Indigenous global revolutions of past, present and future. Listen / biziindan!
