Stephanie Avery is a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary artist with a degree in visual art from York University. With an emphasis on interactivity and empowerment, Stephanie's practice intervenes with familiar spaces, objects and imagery to imbue her subjects with new meanings and narratives. Being especially interested in our collective relationships to the spaces we inhabit, Stephanie explores the world with an equal balance of joy, curiosity and skepticism: a balance she strives to represent in her practice. Her work is both playful and critical, and nothing she does is without a hint of mischief.

About the Collective Collage Mural:

Stephanie invites you to take part in a Collective Collage Mural! Crafted from discarded magazines, the materials will be reclaimed to challenge the suffocating grasp of an overwhelmingly bland, heteronormative, capitalist world. Each scrap is a rebellion against the confines of a medium that dictates who and what is "desirable". Through our art we will subvert these norms, weaving together a tapestry of diversity, queerness and dissent. Our mural won't just be a visual feast, but a rallying cry for liberation, inviting participants to question and reimagine the boundaries of beauty, desire and worth. Fun for participants of all ages, this collaborative activity fosters a much needed dialogue around our relationship to the media landscape, and empowers us to reconsider our relationship to it.
